The Viceroyalty of Peru controlled most of South America except areas of what is now known as Venezuela. The years from 1790 to 1795 and from 1808 to 1814 were particularly marked by Indian/settler conflict in the region, but European Americans forced Indian communities to give up their claims to the land, and eventually most Native Americans signed treaties and moved farther west. The term Latin America is also used erroneously for countries not in Central American and South American, for example scores of Caribbean islands (which are Dutch and English speaking) are often included.
